Certification as a Medication Aide Instructor
Certification as a Medication Aide Instructor
The Registered Nurse must apply to the Board of Nursing to be certified as a Medication Aide Instructor and receive an Instructor Identification Number PRIOR to teaching a Medication Aide class.
- Have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina or have multi-state licensure privilege
- Have had at least two (2) years of practice experience as a Registered Nurse that includes medication administration
- Have successfully completed a 16-hour instructor training program approved by the Board and provided by a Medication Aide Master Teacher
- Maintain Board of Nursing certification as a Medication Aide Instructor (must be renewed every two (2) years at the time of Registered Nurse license renewal)
Applying for Medication Aide Instructor Certification
- Completion of a Medication Aide Course taught by a Board-approved Medication Aide Master Teacher
- Complete the Application to Register for the Registered Nurse Medication Aide Instructor Course – this application must be submitted to the instructor, NOT the North Carolina Board of Nursing
- Complete the Medication Aide Registered Nurse Instructor Certification application (to be signed by Master Teacher) after passing the 16-hour training program
- Submit the application with $25.00 administrative fee to address on application
The North Carolina Board of Nursing will send a certification letter, which includes the Instructor Identification Number, to Medication Aide Registered Nurse Instructor.
Re-Certification as a Medication Aide Instructor
Re-Certification as a Medication Aide Instructor
- Have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina or have multi-state licensure privilege
- The individual has taught at least one 24-hour Medication Aide training program within the preceding two (2) years
- The individual successfully completes a review program approved by the Board
Applying for Medication Aide Instructor Re-Certification
- The Re-Certification application can be found on the Nurse Portal when it is time for the Certified Medication Aide Registered Nurse Instructor to renew
- Complete the application. Note, part of the re-certification requirement is to review Medication Aide Program Revisions-Updates
- Submit the application with $25.00 administrative fee to address on application
- The North Carolina Board of Nursing will send a certification letter by email, which includes the Instructor Identification Number, to Medication Aide Registered Nurse Instructor
Re-Certification Process if Inactive or Have Not Taught Any Course Within the Two-Year Timeframe
If a Medication Aide Registered Nurse Instructor or Master Teacher has been inactive for 2 years or more, or if the individual is currently certified but has not taught any course within the 2 year period, the Registered Nurse Instructor or Master Teacher must repeat the 16-hour Medication Aide Instructor Course (taught by a currently certified Medication Aide Master Teacher) prior to re-approval as a Medication Aide Faculty.
